Q: WHAT ARE THE AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS PER ANNUM?
A: For private non-air transport aircraft the Civil Aviation Authority require a minimum 100 hour / annual and annual review of maintenance (ARA) inspections to be carried out. In addition the ELT and emergency equipment is tested / inspected on an annual basis, Bi-annual avionics inspections include radios, transponder and pitot / static inspection and calibration.
Q: HOW MUCH SHOULD IT COST FOR MAINTENANCE FOR A CESSNA 172 ASSUMING 100 HOURS PER ANNUM?
A: Depending on the condition but generally a 100 hour / annual inspection takes 16 - 18 man hours plus defects found. Approximate charge out rates are between $65-75.00 + GST per hour. ARA logbook inspection cost approximately $250.00 + GST. The bi-annual avionics inspections can cost $150-350.00 + GST plus defects.
Q: WHAT WILL AIRCRAFT INSURANCE COST AND HOW IS IT CALCULATED?
A: Aircraft Insurance is calculated on the agreed hull value, this annual or installed cost is approximately 3-5% of your agreed amount and is very dependant on experience, utilization, the value insured and operating conditions. On the remote chance a claim is made the excess is generally $1,000.00.
Q: HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO RUN A CESSNA 172 PER HOUR?
A: Not taking into account engine and propeller overhaul provision but included fuel, oil, maintenance and unscheduled maintenance I would estimate $70.00 -80.00 + GST per hour plus fixed costs.
Q: WHAT ARE FIXED COST FOR AIRCRAFT OWNERSHIP PER ANNUM?
A: Aircraft Insurance, CAA participation fee of $135.00 and radio station license fee of $112.00. Hangarage or parking (if applicable).
Q: ARE THERE ANY OTHER COST ASSOCIATED WITH FLIGHT OTHER THAN OPERATING AND FIXED COSTS?
A: The only other costs to consider, which are variable from airport to airport, are the landing fees and any enroute air traffic control charges.
Q: WHERE CAN I PARK MY AIRCRAFT?
A: DTI offers short and long term outside parking for $35.00 + GST per week. Hangarage is also available but the cost is dependant on the size of the aircraft.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN ENGINE REACHES MANUFACTURERS TBO?
A: Other than air transport operations an engine may be run on condition for as long as the Licenced Aircraft Engineer (L.A.M.E) is willing to release the aircraft for further flight or when it becomes uneconomic to repair. Manufacturer's TBO is calculated on hours flown or a calendar period - whichever occurs first.
Q: WHAT IS THE COST TO OVERHAUL A LYCOMING O-320 4 CYLINDER ENGINE?
A: Subject to the condition of the crankshaft and crankcase and depending on the standard of overhaul, a top of the line overhaul costs approximately NZ$35,000.00 -39,000.00 + GST to complete the task. This does vary dramatically depending on the current US exchange rate and the extent of the overhaul i.e. new or overhauled parts.
Q: CAN I CARRY OUT MAINTENANCE WORK ON MY OWN AIRCRAFT?
A: In some circumstances and under the direct supervision of a L.A.M.E it can sometimes be allowed.
Q: HOW IS OWNERSHIP AND CLEAR TITLE CONFIRMED WHEN I PURCHASE AN AIRCRAFT?
A: The Vendor or seller provides a document guaranteeing the transfer of clear title, which can be verified through the Personal Property Securities Register.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OWNING MY OWN AIRCARFT?
A: There are many associated benefits and some include; guaranteed availability and serviceability, known maintenance history, flexibility, avionics and equipment levels are to your requirements, impress clients, friends and family.
Q: WHAT IS THE COST TO REFURBISH THE INTERIOR OF A 4 SEAT AIRCRAFT USING APPROVED MATERIALS?
A: Depending on the complexity, existing condition and the quality of material used I would suggest $5,000.00 - 10,000.00 + GST.
Q: HOW MUCH TO PAINT STRIP AND REPAINT A CESSNA 172?
A: Depending to what extent you do to, the complexity of the paint scheme and the finish achieved allow $12,000.00 -15,000.00 + GST plus engineering work.
Q: IS ALL YOUR BUSINESS CONDUCTED IN NEW ZEALAND?
A: Generally only about 50% of our turn over is conducted on shore, we specialize is international aviation and in many cases the aircraft we handle are not seen on NZ shores.
Q: IF I DON'T SEE WHAT I WANT CAN YOU SOURCE AN AIRCRAFT FROM OVERSEAS?

Q: DO AIRCRAFT APPRECIATE OR DEPRECIATE?
A: Rule of thumb and extremely dependant on popularity, current status, exchange rates, condition and maintenance history aircraft generally appreciate over time. The worldwide demand is for late model, low time and clean aircraft, therefore these types appreciate more. Buying the right aircraft is the key!
Q: ARE YOUR SALES AIRCRAFT LOCATED AT ARDMORE?
A: Generally we require all of our sales aircraft to be located on site, this benefits us, the seller and the buyer due to the aircraft, log books and our expertise being on hand in a relaxed environment. Foot traffic and drive-by buyers would account for 25% of our sales, therefore 95% of the listed aircraft are on site.
